Academy for Division Heads with Alfie Kohn and Michael Thompson

Dates: Thursday, February 1 and Friday, February 2, 2007. Time: The Academy will be held from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm on February 1 and 9:00 am to 3:30 pm on February 2. There is an evening activity on Thursday, February 1st which is included in the registration fee. Location: The Academy for Division Heads will take place at the Hotel Allegro in the Walnut Room (2nd floor). The Academy for Division Heads has been designed by ISACS division heads for division leaders at all levels. The Academy experience seeks to strengthen skills, network with colleagues and provide valuable time to step away from the busy pace to refresh, reflect and learn. The 2007 Academy welcomes Alfie Kohn and Michael Thompson, who will be sharing their expertise and insight on homework, rigor/reward, dealing with parents, the emotional/social development of children, and many other hot topics. The Academy will also include time to network, socialize and engage in spirited conversations grouped by topic and division. Alfie Kohn will be joining us on February 1st and Michael Thompson will be joining us on February 2nd. Schedule Thursday, February 1st: Evening Dinner & Activity On Thursday evening, ISACS has organized an evening activity and dinner. Please join your Division Head colleagues from the ISACS region for dinner at Adobo Grill in Old Town and then a night of improv comedy at the famous Second City. Dinner and comedy are included in the registration fee. ***Due to space restrictions, the evening activities are limited to 100 attendees. After registering online you will receive a confirmation email. You need to reply to this email (RSVP) if you are attending the dinner and evening activity.*** Featured Speakers Alfie Kohn Alfie Kohn is the author of ten books on education, parenting, and human behavior, including Punished by Rewards (1993), Beyond Discipline (1996), The Schools Our Children Deserve (1999), What Does it Mean to be Well Edcuated? (2004), and, most recently, Unconditional Parenting (2005). A former independent school teacher, he has written for most of the leading education periodicals – including Independent School -- and has appeared twice on “Oprah.” Time magazine described him as “perhaps the country’s most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades [and] test scores.” Kohn works with educators and parents across the country and speaks regularly at national conferences. His latest book is THE HOMEWORK MYTH: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing. He lives (actually) in the Boston area and (virtually) at www.alfiekohn.org. Michael Thompson Michael Thompson is a consultant, author and psychologist that specializes in children and families. He has worked in more than two hundred and fifty schools across the United States, as well as in international schools in Central America, Europe and Asia. He will explore the role of gender in the education of boys as well as the psychological journey that children experience during their thirteen years in school as a “Pressured Child”. Location The Academy for Division Heads will take place in Chicago at the Hotel Allegro, 171 West Randolph Street.
