All schools work to build positive community and a sense of belonging. Many non-academic programs like orientations, advisory, retreats, field days, and leadership trainings seek to make independent education more personal and relevant to students and teachers. Yet little time is spent on evaluation, design or exchange of best practices in these programs.

This one-day workshop will give educators the opportunity to exchange ideas, effective practices, and models used in their affective programs. Participants will engage in a variety of activities, discussions, and action planning with a focus on creating, evaluating, and designing programs to achieve a positive community. In the spirit of risk taking and fun, this workshop will model the kind of positive community that teachers can create in the school day. Participants will leave with proven models for affective programs including retreats, orientations, student leadership trainings, faculty leadership trainings, assessment and evaluation tools, and a sense of fun.

Matt Nink is former high school English Teacher and Dean of Students. Currently he serves as Executive Director of Global Youth Leadership Institute. As a founding faculty member of GYLI, Matt has delivered programs aboard three tall ships, Erestina, Amistad, and Dennis Sullivan. He has also led student groups to New Mexico, Costa Rica, and Tanzania, East Africa. With a background in English teaching, Matt brings a rich variety of experiences with adult and student learners. He has conducted workshops across on the country on religious and cultural pluralism, environmentalism, school-community partnerships, and leadership, especially youth leadership. Matt’s belief is that our truest calling as teachers is to model the way for students become aware themselves and others as they take the risks necessary for growth. He lives in Milwaukee with his wife and four children.
