Killing Giants, Pulling Thorns: Rationale and Strategies for Student Advocacy

Friday, October 23, 2009
10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Francis W. Parker School
330 West Webster Avenue
Chicago, IL

Educators who care deeply for their students often feel hesitant and ill-equipped to handle student incidents of racism, homophobia, sexism and other injustices. This interactive workshop allays these fears by offering simple, manageable strategies for standing up for students' safety and well-being.

Participants will examine actual cases -- from careless words to active aggression -- drawn from independent schools across the country, and are encouraged to bring their own encounters with student incidents. Attention given to lower, middle, and upper schools. Portions of the film "Let's Get Real", will be shown at the beginning of the workshop.

This workshop is for K-12 faculty, administrators, and diversity practitioners.
