Building Number Sense and a Love of Math

Tuesday, December 8, 2009
10:00 am - 3:00 pm

The Gage Restaurant
24 S. Michigan Ave.

***This workshop has reached capacity. If you would like to be placed on the waitlist, please call the ISACS office at 312-255-1244.

Practically all young children can develop a solid understanding of basic number concepts and values. With the right sequence of kinesthetic and manipulative activities, we can help children truly understand and appreciate mathematics for life.

But with all the content teachers are asked to "cover", it is easy to understand how difficult it might be to determine if there are gaps in the foundation skills that allow math learning to be fun and successful. In this workshop we will explore simple and efficient ways to determine exactly which skills a child has, and which skills the child is ready to learn. We will also develop simple strategies for instruction that focus on the specific needs of each child.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the essential sequence of early number concepts,
  • Learn how children can learn to fake their way through mathematical learning if they miss essential skills,
  • Learn to assess the essential sequence of early number concepts,
  • Learn to develop instructional strategies at the correct level of challenge,
  • Make mathematical learning fun in the early years,
  • Develop the skills to help practically every child understand basic number concepts, and
  • Smile a lot!

This workshop is for teachers and administrators in preschool through grade three.
