In this workshop, Carl Anderson, author of How’s It Going? A Practical Guide to Conferring with Student Writers, Assessing Writers, and Strategic Writing Conferences Grades 3-6, will discuss the how-to’s of having effective writing conferences with students. He'll explain key conferring concepts, discuss the teacher’s role in a writing conference and strategies for helping students play an active role in conferences, and answer the most frequently asked questions about managing conferences in a classroom.

Carl will also discuss the essential link between conferring and assessment. He'll discuss assessment lenses that will help teachers uncover what their students know about writing, and help them figure out what to teach them next in writing conferences. He’ll also talk about the importance of setting assessment-based writing goals for students that can help prioritize what to teach in conferences.

Throughout the workshop, Carl will show videos of his conferences with students to give participants a clear image of effective conferring. And he'll show and discuss typical writing samples from primary and upper grade classrooms, and use them to demonstrate the how to assess student writers.

Participants will learn new ways of thinking about writing conferences, and practical conferring strategies that they will be able to put into practice as soon as they return to their classrooms.
