The Anatomy of a Crisis - Training, Trends and Topics
Jane Hulbert, Crisis Consultant

Monday, May 2, 2011
10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Latin School of Chicago
59 West North Boulevard
Chicago, IL 60610

It is impossible to know when a crisis will happen, and many schools are totally unprepared to effectively deal with the unexpected.  It is exceptionally important to prepare long before the crisis begins. This workshop will present participants with a brief review of crisis basics and will then provide advanced crisis management trends and strategies. Participants will learn to skillfully take control of a situation (especially when things feel out of control and Fox Television is in your school’s parking lot), assess the level of transparency with the effective use of social media (twitter, facebook, school website, you tube), develop messages that have actual meaning (not just “spokesperson language”), and determine how to communicate effectively with a range of constituencies.

Participants will learn from role plays and review actual case studies that will include many high profile cases that have attracted national media. Also addressed will be the management of negative blogs and the role of social media in ongoing communications planning. Plan to attend before a crisis happens at your school so you are prepared. Learn to create a highly effective crisis plan so your school is ready in case the unthinkable happens.

This training is essential for heads of school, administrators with crisis responsibility, communications directors and trustees.

Jane Hulbert has been in the communication field for 25 years with a focus on crisis communications, executive coaching, presentation skills and media relations. On retainer to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) as the crisis communications consultant since 2003, Ms. Hulbert advises independent schools, the International Baccalaureate, colleges and universities on communications issues ranging from strategic communications to crisis planning. She is a frequent presenter at state independent school associations. Prior to her work with schools, she directed the global media relations department at McDonald's Corporation working throughout the world on high profile communication issues. She also managed and served as primary spokesperson on the infamous "hot coffee" situation.

This workshop will take place at the Latin School of Chicago, 59 West North Boulevard, Chicago. The Latin School is conveniently accessible by public transportation and taxis. Click here for directions and parking information for The Latin School.
