Reducing Underage Drinking and Teen Drug Use in Independent Schools
Jeff Wolfsberg, Jeff Wolfsberg and Associates, Inc - Drug Education Specialists

Monday, January 10, 2011
10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Hotel Allegro
171 West Randolph Street
Chicago, IL 60601

Jeff WolfsbergThe use of alcohol and other drugs is no stranger to independent schools. Independent school administrators cite substance use violations as the number one reason for school expulsion and suspension.

Statistics reveal that independent schools are far from immune from the destructive effects of substances by teens. Research shows that public school students start using substances earlier than their independent school peers, but by high school, many independent school students exceed public schools students in their use of alcohol and other drugs and mental health problems.

Colleges cite alcohol, other drug use, and mental health issues as the top three issues affecting student retention and achievement. How does this impact our idea of what “College Prep” means?

In this interactive and discussion-based workshop, you will learn best practices in school-based alcohol and other drug programming, what other independent schools are doing successfully, and how to bridge the gap between theory and practical application.

Specific areas to be addressed:

  • Research regarding what works and what doesn’t in alcohol and other drug education; how your school compares
  • Building long-term support for alcohol and other drug education programs
  • Building long-term support for health and wellness programs
  • Engaging faculty in prevention including early intervention efforts
  • Effective models for contemporary alcohol and other drug education programs

Jeff Wolfsberg is a highly regarded expert on school-based alcohol and other drug education programs. He frequently conducts workshops and keynotes for colleges and universities, Fortune 500 companies, independent secondary schools, public health agencies, communities, and professional associations on preventing and intervening early on teen alcohol and other drug use. Jeff’s articles and comments on adolescent substance abuse appear in many publications, including TIME Magazine, Educational Digest, and Independent School Magazine. He is a regular guest expert for FOX NEWS and an expert guest blogger for The Partnership for a Drug-Free America.

The workshop will take place in Chicago at the Hotel Allegro, 171 West Randolph Street. The Hotel Allegro is located in the heart of downtown Chicago in the busy theatre district in close proximity to the Art Institute and Navy Pier. It is also just minutes from Grant Park, Millennium Park, Lincoln Park and Chicago's beautiful lakefront that stretches for miles.
