Chicago, IL 60610

***The New Teacher Institute is currently at capacity. If you would like to add your new teacher to the waitlist, please call the ISACS office at 312-255-1244.

The New Teacher Institute will formally begin at 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 27 and will end at 12:00 noon Saturday, July 30. Participants should make plans to attend the Institute in its entirety.

***Independent school educators in their first two years of teaching experience.

This energizing Institute will provide new teachers with the strategies essential for a successful start to their teaching careers. The Institute will also allow participants to begin building the foundation for a long and successful career in independent schools. Interactive experiences reflective of best practices will aid in the development of skills and understanding in the following areas:

  • Understanding the culture of independent schools
  • Communicating effectively with parents, students, colleagues, administration and the broader school community
  • Balancing responsibilities and managing time
  • Maintaining professionalism
  • Managing classrooms effectively, based on the work of Harry Wong
  • Designing curriculum through a backward design process
  • Dealing with stress and change
  • Building healthy relationships with colleagues
  • Dealing with conflict
  • Partnering with parents
  • Developing leadership skills
  • Networking with others new to independent schools
  • Finding and using mentors
  • Building a foundation for excellence

Participants will engage in active and experiential approaches to understanding best practice for highly effective teaching. Presentations, conversations, role-playing, simulations, video analysis, collaborative work, professional readings, and personal testimonials will all be presented with research-based modeling of best practice, combined with humor, music, and the enduring commitment of experienced professionals.

School communities expect and require new teachers to be highly effective on the first day of school. Often, there is more information than can be processed effectively without overloading the new teacher. Participants will learn best practices at a manageable pace in a supportive atmosphere.

Jill Webb brings years of independent school experience to the Institute. She currently serves as the director of professional development for ISACS and head of lower school at The Wellington School (OH). Jill brings the experience gained from training hundreds of new teachers and mentors nationally, and has been a frequent presenter on the topic of teacher development and leadership.

Mark Wagner is the head of upper school at the Sanford School (DE). Mark brings extensive independent school experience as both a teacher and administrator and presents in the areas of teacher leadership, curriculum and professional development. His engaging style and creative vision make him a wonderful member of the New Teacher Institute faculty.

Ken Rogers, a trained counselor, is a former faculty member of The Association of Independent Maryland Schools Fellows Program for New Teachers. With independent school experience as a teacher, dean and head of middle school, Ken is a frequent ISACS presenter and consultant to independent schools. Currently, Ken is the head of middle school at Germantown Academy (PA).
