Engaging Student Writers: Even the Boys!
Ralph Fletcher

Wednesday, November 16, 2011
10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Kellogg School of Management - Conference Center
Chicago, IL

Ralph Fletcher has long mentored teachers as they taught students to write and he will be sharing his expertise in a one-day writing workshop where participants will learn  specific strategies in the following areas:

  • Making classrooms much more friendly for boys
  • Encouraging more choice in the writing classroom
  • Encouraging more play in the writing classroom
  • Using mentor texts to lift and strengthen student writing

Participants will gain a clear understanding of how and why boys are struggling in today’s writing classrooms, and will gain a better understanding of the boys’ perspective.  The issue and impact of choice in writing will also be explored.  Insight into the role that humor plays in the writing process for boys will be shared as participants learn concrete steps that can be taken to widen the circle, making classrooms more boy friendly.  The use of technology to spark boys’ engagement in writing will be explored as a strategy to employ with ALL writers in your classroom – even the boys!

This workshop is for teachers in grades K-8 including elementary classroom teachers, language arts teachers, literacy coaches, specialists, administrators, and curriculum coordinators.
Ralph Fletcher is a friend of writers, young and old, as well as writing teachers. His newest professional book is Mentor Author, Mentor Texts (Heinemann). Other books on teaching writing include Teaching the Qualities of Writing, Writing Workshop: The Essential Guide, and Craft Lessons (co-authored with his wife JoAnn Portalupi). His books for young readers include a Fig Pudding, Uncle Daddy (winner of the 2002 Christopher Award), and Also Known As Rowan Pohi, a young adult novel to be published fall of 2011. As author and consultant, Ralph has worked with teachers around the U.S. and abroad, helping them find wiser ways of teaching writing. He lives with his family in New Hampshire where he grows orchids and has a passion for dark chocolate.

The workshop will take place in downtown Chicago in the Conference Center at the Kellogg School of Management, 340 East Superior Street, Chicago, IL 60611.
