Perplexing Mathematical Applications Using Digital Media
Dan Meyer

Friday, April 12, 2013
9:45 am - 3:30 pm

Courtyard Chicago Marriott Magnificent Mile
Chicago, IL

** As of 1/29/13 - Updated Program Location and Time: Due to the popularity of this workshop we have RELOCATED the workshop to the Courtyard Chicago Marriott Magnificent Mile which will allow for additional attendees. We highly recommend if you are planning to attend this workshop, to register today!  The workshop will take place from 9:45 am - 3:30 pm.**

Perplexity is invaluable currency in the mathematics classroom. Perplexity is the stuff of being perplexed. When students are perplexed, they aren't asking "when will we use this in real life?" because they're too busy chasing down answers to rich mathematical questions they came up with themselves. When curriculum is perplexing, the teacher doesn't have to announce the day's objective, because perplexity nudges yesterday's concept naturally into today's. In this hands-on workshop, we will discover methods for capturing perplexity, from YouTube videos, TV shows, and movies; for creating perplexity, using free and cheap technology; and for presenting perplexity, using pedagogy that draws in every learner, that knows when to give the student help and when to get out of the student's way.

This workshop is for grade 6-12 math educators.

Please bring your laptop, tablet or other device to access the Internet. You will also be sent an email a week before the workshop to download videos to your portable device.

Dan Meyer taught high school math for six years to students who, in many cases, did not like high school math. He is currently a doctoral candidate at Stanford University in the field of math education. He speaks internationally and works with publishers to help them transition from print to digital media. He was named one of Tech & Learning's 30 Leaders of the Future and an Apple Distinguished Educator. To learn more, visit his blog
