Intellectual Need in the Math Classroom: Grades 6-12
Dan Meyer

Thursday, May 7, 2015
9:30 am - 3:00 pm

ISACS Office Conference Room
55 West Wacker Drive, Suite 702
Chicago, IL 60601

***Registration Update as of 4/8.***
Thank you for your interest in this workshop. As of April 8th, the workshop has reached capacity. If you would like to be added to the waitlst, please select the blue waitlist button and complete the information. If a space becomes available, ISACS will contact those on the waitlist.

We threaten and we persuade. We try to add real-world context to problems. In spite of our efforts, students often disengage from mathematics still. Dan Meyer will describe research-based methods for instilling in students a need for new learning. Participants will learn how to make standards’ modeling practice accessible to students, resulting in engagement and higher achievement.

As part of their work, the presenter and the participants will construct a website full of resources, including a document of “rules for the road” – easily implemented techniques for putting students in that state of intellectual need. That website will remain online after the workshop is complete. An example can be found at http://shrewsbury13.mrmeyer.com/

This workshop is for middle and upper school math educators, grades 6-12.

Presenter
Dan Meyer taught high school math to students who didn't like high school math. He has advocated for better math instruction on CNN, Good Morning America, Everyday With Rachel Ray, and TED.com. He currently studies math education at Stanford University, speaks internationally, and works with textbook publishers, helping them move from education's print past to its digital future. He has worked for Google and was named one of Tech & Learning's 30 Leaders of the Future. To learn more, visit his blog http://blog.mrmeyer.com/.
