Please call the ISACS office at 312-750-1190 if you have any questions.

Change is the name of the game in the 21st century library. In order to preserve, promote and enhance the role of the library in a school, librarians have to develop a model for incorporating change into the way they build and manage both facilities and collections. School libraries provide a physical space that is critical for teaching, research, production, community and reflection, and a collection of resources in multiple formats to support these activities. In this hands-on workshop, librarians Liz Gray and Shannon Acedo will guide participants through a process for making necessary changes in their libraries and provide them with tools and resources that they can use in the future. Participants should bring a laptop or tablet, a floor plan of their library with dimensions (hand-drawn is fine if no blueprint exists), and ideas for the kinds of changes they would like to make to move their program forward.

Learning Goals:

  • explore the ways in which libraries have to change to meet the needs of 21st century students and schools
  • look at examples of library spaces that have adapted to some of those changes
  • generate ideas for changes to participants’ physical spaces
  • become familiar with the wide variety of ebook vendors and platforms available to school libraries
  • learn about the primary ethical and pedagogical issues facing ebook management, including learning styles and privacy
  • examine collection development strategies that include resources in a range of formats
