A Sensory-Based Approach for Difficult Behaviors in Children 3-12 Years
Kathleen Morris

Tuesday, March 3, 2015
9:30 am - 3:00 pm

ISACS Office Conference Room
55 West Wacker Drive, Suite 702
Chicago, IL 60601

Do you feel that it has gotten increasingly difficult to maintain attention, or that you spend more time dealing with disruptive behaviors? Add to that the fact that teachers are required to do so much more within the day and it’s easy to see why even the best prepared educators feels as if they are spending their time managing children and less time teaching them.

Our classrooms are filled with more behavioral challenges due to the fact that we have an increase in children dealing with Sensory Processing Disorder and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Both of these disorders make it extremely difficult for children to feel comfortable, less distracted and physically able to focus and learn.

This workshop will help participants:

  • identify the subcategories of SPD and how they affect children's behaviors
  • recognize the symptoms of SPD within each age category
  • develop strategies for achieving optimal state of arousal for learning
  • utilize age-specific activities for children to enable them to focus on tasks
  • modify the learning environment to help accommodate sensory challenges

This workshop is for faculty and administrators, OTs, PTs, psychologists and counselors in PS through Lower School

Kathleen Morris, MS, CCC-SLP has worked in public and private schools, established a multi-discipline pediatric clinic and pre-school in Dallas, Texas.
