Professional Learning: Strategies & Protocols for Adult Learners

This program is designed for educators interested in becoming more comfortable and confident designing and facilitating professional learning opportunities for colleagues. The use of protocols for professional learning can be extremely helpful in optimizing professional development time.  So much can be said and heard in a shorter time when parameters and structures are used to support powerful collaborative discussion. Participants will leave this session with tools, resources, templates and strategies for powerful professional learning. 

Participants will learn how to:

  • Develop a better understanding of adult learning theory around which to base all professional learning 
  • Work on designing professional learning experiences with key elements of effective instructional design 
  • Frame the work of using protocols for professional learning so others understand their purpose and meaning 
  • Use e a variety of protocols and processes for specific learning purposes 
  • Enhance one’s ability to deal with resistance and challenging moments during a professional learning session
  • Increase awareness around one’s non-verbals and one’s body language to enhance one’s credibility with colleagues

This workshop is for teacher leaders, team and department leads, anyone who designs, leads or facilitates professional development opportunities for staff PK-12.

Presenter
Jennifer Abrams is an international educational and communications consultant for public and private schools, hospitals, universities and non-profits.  She trains and coaches teachers, administrators, hospital personnel and others on successful instructional practices, new employee support, supervision and evaluation, generational savvy, having hard conversations and effective collaboration skills. Her publications include the book, Having Hard Conversations, Planning Productive Talk, an article for ASCD Educational Leadership (October, 2011), the chapter, "Habits of Mind for the School Savvy Leader” in Art Costa and Bena Kallick’s book, Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind: 16 Essential Characteristics for Success.  Her newest book co-authored with Valerie Von Frank is The Multigenerational Workplace: Communicate, Collaborate and Create Community. Abrams has been featured in ASCD’s new video series, Master Class. She considers herself a voice coach, helping others learn how to best use their voices, be it in a group, in front of a classroom, coaching a colleague and in a supervisory role. For more information, visit www.jenniferabrams.com

The workshop will take place at the ISACS classroom at 55 West Wacker Drive, Suite 702, Chicago, IL. 

The location is located in the heart of Chicago, with easy access to public transportation.

‚ÄčGO Airport Express (Share-a-Ride) Shuttle Service
ISACS has negotiated a special rate with GO Airport Express for ISACS members – 15% off standard rates. Reservations MUST be made in advance and online to receive the discounted rate.  The standard rate per person to/from O’Hare is approximately $28 one-way; $49 round-trip. The standard rate per person to/from Midway is approximately $24 one-way; $40 round-trip. A credit card is required and charged at the time of reservation. Airport walk-ups are not be eligible for the discounted rate, standard rates apply. Registration Fee

  • $190 member fee
  • $240 non-member fee 
  • First registrant pays full fee, each additional registrant receives a $20 discount
  • Workshop includes coffee/tea, light breakfast, lunch and refreshments

Registration Confirmation Communications from ISACS
Once registration for the workshop has been completed the following communications will be sent from ISACS:

  • Once registration is complete, an email will automatically be sent to the contact person on the registration confirming that registration has been completed.
  • Approximately three weeks prior to the workshop, ISACS will send a confirmation email to the registrant with details for the workshop.
  • Approximately one week prior to the workshop, ISACS will send a final confirmation email to the registrant with details for the workshop.

If you do not receive these emails prior to arriving at a workshop, please call the ISACS office at 312-750-1190. It is possible your email address was entered incorrectly OR your registration was not completed.

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations must be received in writing to ISACS by emailing programinfo@isacs.org 10 business days prior to the event to receive a 50% refund. Cancellations received within 10 days of the event will not receive a refund. Registration may be transferred to another member from the same school. ISACS reserves the right to cancel the workshop for insufficient enrollment. In this case, participants will be notified and given a full refund.
