Best Practices in Meeting the Needs of Gifted Learners
Lisa Van Gemert

Friday, December 11, 2015
9:30 am - 3:00 pm

ISACS Classroom
55 West Wacker Drive, Suite 702
Chicago, IL

In a fast-paced, relevant workshop, participants will:

  • learn the strategies necessary to meet the needs of gifted learners in diverse classrooms
  • gain an understanding of critical structures in the brain and how to harness that understanding to bring power to your teaching
  • discover the secrets of truly effective small group work & learn the insider tips that will help you group students effortlessly in a way that allows gifted students to work well with peers
  • explore some of the best tech resources available to teachers and students
  • practice using kinesthetics in the classroom to raise student engagement
  • leave with techniques to drag-and-drop into their classrooms with ease the very next day

How can teachers meet the needs of gifted students in mixed-ability classrooms? They can do it by unleashing the power of best practices in the core areas that affect student engagement. Key structures of the brain important in learning (and why one of them is causing fights on campuses and in families) will be shared.  Discover the reason kids under stress can’t learn and how to help. Find out how gifted learners can work effectively in groups and explore grouping in the real world classroom in a way that builds camaraderie and saves time.  Take away great ideas and an understanding of best practices in grouping. Thirty tips and tools teachers can use in their classrooms immediately will be provided. A blend of technology and solid, research-based techniques, the tools shared will have participants itching to try them out right away. Strategies for micro and macro movement opportunities will be shared, because we know students with active minds perform best when their bodies move, too.

Using a combination of neuropsychology, pedagogy, humor, technology and sheer fun, Lisa Van Gemert (@gifted_guru) shares with educators how to effectively meet the needs of gifted students and serve all students at the same time. Van Gemert is the Youth & Education Ambassador for Mensa, as well an international speaker on issues of neuropsychology & gifted education. She is an expert consult to television shows, writer of award-winning lesson plans, and author of the children’s and teachers’ guides to the National Book Festival, as well numerous published articles on social psychology and pedagogy. She holds an MEd and she serves as Vice Chair of the Student Advocacy Division of the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented, where she also serves on the Membership Involvement Committee.
