Managing Children's Emotional Health
Katherine B. Howard

Wednesday, January 11, 2017
9:30 am - 3:00 pm

ISACS Classroom
Chicago, IL

It is estimated that about one in five students will experience a mental health challenge great enough to significantly impede their learning and level of comfort in school.  In this workshop learn how to identify the signs of emotional and behavioral challenges that go beyond simple “style” differences and how to intervene in practical and helpful ways. We will address how to talk about your concerns with parents, how to work with outside professionals and, most importantly, the simple things you can do to make things “better, not worse” for a student and family who is struggling with issues of mood regulation, anxiety and other mental health issues. The focus will be on practical strategies (e.g., how to help a kindergartner who is terrified of the fire alarm, what to do for kids who “ruin” recess, how to address the “frequent school nurse visitor,” what to do for kids who are always absent on presentation days, how to respond to the “contagion” of social media-induced self-injury, what to do for the “lone eater” in the cafeteria, etc.)  We will also address classroom culture features that promote robust socio- emotional/behavioral growth for all students to maximize wellness and foster a culture of care and support.

Participants will learn:

  • to recognize the signs of mental health challenges in kids
  • what to do if they suspect that the issue is great enough to call for professional support and/or how to work with outside professionals already involved with the child
  • what to do to support the child (e.g., protecting privacy, destigmatizing the challenge, adapting instruction, engaging in simple ways of minimizing distress at school and maximizing comfort and learning, finding the vocabulary to talk about all of this, etc.)
  • how to set up a classroom that promotes well-being for all kids and results in the highest level of emotional intelligence being nurtured

This workshop is for teachers, counselors and administrators in grades K-12.
