Managing Bias in Hiring
Gloria J. Woods

Monday, March 6, 2017
9:30 am - 3:00 pm

ISACS Classroom
Chicago, IL

We want to attract and hire the best talent for our teams, schools and organizations. We are committed to fair, equitable, and inclusive processes. We’re good people trying to do all of this well in a complex world, with all of human differences in the mix. This workshop leads with the principle that, “we are all good people, and we all have biases.” Studies show, and more importantly we know, that we have biases—positive and negative that impact our relationships, our decisions, our lives and the lives of others. We all desire a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive workplace, so we need to expand our capability to value each other’s differences, challenge assumptions, and manage our biases. The workshop will offer an opportunity to put a diversity and inclusion lens on this critical process and on ourselves as the key stewards. What might we gain? Personal growth, real and respectful relationships, high performing teams, fair and equitable hiring and people practices, and ultimately successful organizations.

During this interactive and experiential workshop participants will:

  • understand the value and power of attracting the best talent from all backgrounds
  • explore all levels of bias (unconscious, conscious, and group), including some new research on the topic
  • explore their “identities” and the impact these have on our worldview, perspectives and hiring
  • understand ways to consider diversity in hiring process - from attraction to selection
  • build the culturally competent skills needed to identify, challenge and manage bias
  • understand the linkage of managing bias to personal growth and organizational success
  • assess personal areas of opportunity and develop specific tactics for managing bias and enhancing inclusion
