Beyond Calming Down: Strategies for Handling Anxiety in School

When children and their parents are in the grips of anxiety and worry, it feels overwhelming and mysterious. Anxiety is a very persistent master; when it moves in, it takes over daily routines, learning, sleep and recreation. To make matters worse, the things that we do intuitively as adults to help and console our anxious children actually make the anxiety stronger. Schools, parents, pediatricians and many others in the helping professions unknowingly give families and children the “crutches” to diminish the anxiety in the short-term, but are actually supporting a strategy that teaches avoidance and leaves children less capable of handling life’s challenges. This leads, unfortunately, to additional problems. An untreated anxiety disorder in children is one of the top predictors of depression in adolescence and early adulthood. The good news? Research shows that modifying certain cognitive and relational patterns makes a significant difference in whether or not children go on to become anxious or depressed adults. Identifying what parents and teachers can do proactively and retroactively--paying attention to how and what we teach children about risk, danger, uncertainty, and problem solving—is critical. This workshop will discuss seven concrete strategies schools can use with their students—strategies that not only help children and teens understand anxiety as it impacts them currently in school, but also serve to prevent the development of anxiety and depression later in life. All PK-12 are welcome. ![]() Lynn Lyons is a psychotherapist, author, and speaker with a special interest in interrupting the generational patterns of anxiety in families. She is the co-author with Reid Wilson of Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents and the companion book for kids Playing with Anxiety: Casey’s Guide for Teens and Kids. She is the author of Using Hypnosis with Children: Creating and Delivering Effective Interventions, which describes treatment approaches for children with anxiety, depression, sleep issues, and medical issues.
