School Description:

The German International School Chicago (GISC), founded in 2007, is a private, non-profit bilingual IB World School with a curriculum mainly taught in German and an intercultural approach. The School welcomes students of all backgrounds and nationalities. Students learn in a supportive, personalized, and individualized environment that nurtures curiosity and creativity while fostering global awareness. GSC students - fluent in German and English - will become well rounded, creative, tolerant, and responsible global citizens. GISC Preschool & Kindergarten (ages 3-6) offer a curriculum based on hands-on Montessori materials with a whole-child approach. It encourages self-motivation and independence, develops self-confidence, and promotes self-discovery. Language development requires the most individualization as students entering GISC vary in German proficiency and language development. Kindergartners also receive formal instruction in English Language Arts. Multi-age classes are taught by teachers who have been educated in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, or the United States. Upon entering first grade, students will have acquired oral fluency in German as well as some basic reading and writing skills. Preschool offers part-day (8:30-1:00) and full-day (8:30-3:00) programs 5 days/week. Kindergarten is a full-day (8:30-3:00) program. GISC Elementary & Middle School (ages 6-14; grades 1-8) offers Grades 1-8 in the 2018-2019 school year, and Grades 1-9 will be offered in the 2018-2019 school year. New enrollees who lack German language fluency (Grades K-2) will receive extra help to catch up with the required proficiency in German. The school has been accredited as an IB World School, offering the PYP (Primary Years Program) and the MYP (Middle Years Program). The curriculum encourages independent and group learning. Transdisciplinary projects (e.g., biology and ecology, music and math) – as developed in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program – further the integration of students' skills and knowledge. Students work on topics with global perspectives. Through structured inquiry, students build knowledge, develop meaning, and refine understanding. Group projects also focus on communication skills and team work. Students strive to be: Inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. Although the curriculum will continue to be taught mainly in German in Elementary School, students will also receive some instruction in various subject areas in English and formal Language Arts instruction in English. Starting in 3rd grade, students learn French. In Middle School, the two main languages of instruction are German and English. GISC Upper School (ages 14-18; Grades 9-12) is planned to open in the future. It will offer the IB Program as well as course work required for a US High School Diploma.

GISC is starting the 2018-2019 school year at a new, larger campus at 1726 W Berteau Ave.
