School Description:

Broadly, The Lexington School is an independent, coeducational day school enrolling students in either traditional preschool classes or Montessori and in grades 1-8. Purposefully. Founded in 1959 by Josephine Abercrombie to offer a high-quality independent education for talented children, the school continues to be traditional in curriculum and innovative in method. Brightly. Enrolling academically promising boys and girls. Coming from Lexington and surrounding counties, our students represent a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Academically. Our time-tested curriculum covers the core areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, enriched by physical education, computer technology, foreign language, library science, and fine and performing arts. At all grade levels our teachers emphasize student-centered, active learning. Personally. Within our small classes, averaging 12 to 16 students, our teachers plan activities appropriate to students' individual learning styles. We're proud of our low student/teacher ratio and also of our extraordinarily fine faculty of experienced educators with a proven ability to inspire and guide children, to respond to individual differences, and to conduct lively, creative classes. Daily. Preschool classrooms are individually staffed by two teachers; grades 1-3 learn in traditional, self-contained classrooms and visit other sites on campus for science, physical education, and the arts; in grades 4-5, which are team-taught, students change rooms for some subject areas. The Middle School (6-8) is designed to meet the specific needs of young adolescent. Instruction in both computer use and foreign language begins in preschool. Comfortably. Situated on 25 wooded acres in the southwestern suburbs of Lexington, our campus includes two gymnasiums, a fine arts wing, a darkroom, an art gallery, state-of-the-art computer laboratories, a theater, a library of more than 17,000 volumes, two playgrounds, four soccer fields, and an outdoor basketball court. The preschool and first grade classrooms occupy their own wing. Actively. Our interscholastic teams (for grades 5-8) compete against public, independent, and parochial schools in soccer, basketball, tennis, and lacrosse. Lower School students play intramurals in soccer, football, basketball, and other sports. Creatively. For curricular enhancement, we offer field trips, a Visiting Artist Series, a Writers’ Guild and Visiting Author Program, Old Kentucky Days, the Greek Festival, Celebrate Creativity Day, and the Metric Olympics. Extracurricular groups include band, chorus, string ensemble, Chess Team, and Speech Team. Traditional events span a long list, from Fall Festival, the Boo Sing, and the Holiday Concert to the Little Kentucky Derby, Carnival, and Spirit Day. Thoughtfully. Each grade cultivates particular values and traits, from friendship and inclusiveness to social responsibility and good citizenship. Outreach activities are organized by the Parents Association and range widely, from local charities to environmental advocacy. Confidently. The Lexington School now has more than 1,000 alumni  who went on to enroll in top boarding schools and in excellent local high schools. At least 50 former students have been named National Merit Semi-Finalists.
