School Description:

Established in 1923, Burroughs is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school for students in grades 7-12.

The Burroughs experience is distinguished by objectives set by our founders, including a mix of informality, community service and traditions such as morning assembly and family-style lunch which bring us together daily. We put a premium on global awareness and cultural competency, service and sustainability, and ethics. Our core curriculum in humanities and STEM is balanced by extensive opportunities in athletics, health and wellness as well as in the fine, practical and performing arts. Students engage in more than four dozen student-run, faculty-sponsored activities – from chess teams to cheerleading squads, from a super mileage vehicle club to a literary and art magazine, from Extra Hands for ALS to the Business Club.

Our 49-acre campus in St. Louis County includes a main classroom building; athletic center; fine arts building; performing arts center; science, technology and research building; student commons; full complement of playing fields and courts, and an indoor pool. We also have an outdoor education facility in the Ozarks in south central Missouri.

In 2018-2019, enrollment stands at 625, averaging just over 100 students per grade. Forty percent of the student body identify as students of color. The seventh grade class comes from 26 public, parochial and independent schools. The student to faculty ratio is 7 to 1.

Admission is based on school records, recommendations, an entrance examination and an interview. Personal qualities are a major consideration. Twenty-three percent of our students receive tuition aid, and no one should fail to apply to Burroughs because of financial need.

Our world-class faculty average 19 years teaching experience (12 at Burroughs), and 78% hold advanced degrees. They interact with students beyond the classroom in an atmosphere that fosters independence while providing individual academic and personal support.

Eighteen members of the Class of 2018 (97 students) were semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition and another 12 earned Letters of Commendation. The median SAT scores for the Class of 2018 were Math/720 and Critical Reading/730. The median ACT for that class was 33.

On average, students matriculate to more than five dozen schools nationwide. The top college choices for the past ten years have been Washington University in St. Louis, Indiana University, New York University, University of Miami (FL), University of Missouri, Tulane University, Yale University, Southern Methodist University, University of Southern California, and Princeton University.
