School Description:

Established in 1923, Burroughs is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school for students in grades 7-12.

Burroughs strives to instill the joy of living through active learning, integrity, and service to others. We seek to cultivate an inclusive community that nurtures authentic learners who lead and inspire meaningful lives. At Burroughs we do so by loving and celebrating our differences, embracing challenges and championing growth, fostering a culture of great expectations, teaching empathy and the power of service, and offering a balanced and broad experience. Faculty, parents, and students share a commitment to a broad-based liberal arts education that strikes a balance among academics, arts, athletics, and activities. We believe that the many dimensions of diversity, equity, and inclusivity are essential to excellence in education, and they are woven into the fabric of the Burroughs experience, and we put a premium on global awareness, service and sustainability, and ethics.

The Burroughs experience is distinguished by objectives set by our founders, including a mix of informality, community service and traditions such as morning assembly and family-style lunch which bring us together daily. Students engage in more than four dozen student-run, faculty-sponsored activities – from chess teams to cheerleading squads, from a super mileage vehicle club to a literary and art magazine, from Extra Hands for ALS to the Business Club.

Our 49-acre campus in St. Louis County includes a main classroom building; athletic center; fine arts building; performing arts center; science, technology and research building; student commons; full complement of playing fields and courts, and an indoor pool. We also have an outdoor education facility in the Ozarks in south central Missouri.

In 2019-2020, enrollment stands at 642, averaging just over 100 students per grade in the middle school and 110 students in the high school. Forty-two percent of the student body identify as students of color. Twenty-four percent of the student body receives tuition aid. The seventh grade class came from 23 public, parochial and independent schools and 25 zip codes. Fifty percent of the class identify as students of color. The student to faculty ratio is 7 to 1.

Our world-class faculty average 19 years teaching experience (13 at Burroughs), and 77% hold advanced degrees. They interact with students beyond the classroom in an atmosphere that fosters independence while providing individual academic and personal support.

Twenty-four members of the Class of 2019 (103 students) were Semi-Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition and another 10 earned Letters of Commendation.  The median SAT scores for the Class of 2019 were Math/750 and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing/720.  The median ACT score for that class was 33.

On average, students matriculate to more than five dozen schools nationwide.  The top college choices for the past ten years have been Washington University in St. Louis, Indiana University, New York University, University of Southern California, University of Miami, Tulane University, University of Missouri - Columbia, University of Chicago, Princeton University, and Yale University.

Admission is based on school records, recommendations, an entrance examination and an interview. Personal qualities are a major consideration. No one should fail to apply to Burroughs because of financial need.
